How Much Roof Space is Required for Solar?

Roof area needed per kW, real examples for 3 kW to 10 kW systems, and how elevated structures recover usable space.

· 4 min read

The rule of thumb

Plan for 80–100 sq. ft. of shadow-free roof per kW with modern high-efficiency modules. 3 kW needs about 300 sq. ft., 5 kW about 500 sq. ft. and 10 kW about 1,000 sq. ft.

Shadow-free matters more than total area

Water tanks, parapets, stair rooms and neighbouring buildings all cast moving shadows. A morning-to-evening shadow study during the site visit determines real usable area.

Elevated structures

Raising the array clears obstructions and keeps the terrace usable for drying, seating or storage — a common choice on compact urban plots.
